Workshops

Workshops take place before the welcome reception on Sunday June 14 between 15:00-18:00.

The participation fee is €30.

Workshop 1: Making gut strings, max. 10 participants

Master luthier Rauno Nieminen

In this workshop, the participants make gut strings with traditional methods, and they practice setting up the strings on instruments. Other string materials for folk instruments are also discussed. The final polishing of the strings will happen during the symposium as the strings dry.

Workshop 2: Wind instruments from natural materials, max 20. participants

Bachelor of Culture and Arts in wood design and a self-taught artist Minna Hokka

In this workshop, the participants become acquainted with Finnish-Karelian pipe and horn instruments. They craft reed pipes and kazoo-type humming pipes and experiment with playing dandelion stems. The workshop also offers practical exploration of instrument acoustics, including how reed properties affect sound and what the most succesfully functioning humming and dandelion-stem pipes look like.

The medieval soropipe is a primitive clarinet-type instrument with a reed carved directly into its body. Everyone may tune their pipes to their liking. By placing the finger holes freely, improvising becomes interesting. Soropipes can be made from dried common reed, rye straw, or angelica. In summer, cow parsley is suitable for short-lived versions.

The humming pipe is a kazoo-type mirliton used by archipelago fishermen around the turn of the 20th century. It is made by carefully carving away the surface to reveal a thin membrane in the reed. A case is made to protect the delicate instrument.

A dandelion stem can be played like an oboe. The participants explore how this works and cut finger holes into it.

Welcome to learn traditional skills and discover ancient wind instruments. This workshop opens pathways toward natural and self-directed musical expression.
